Global Trade Idea - Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN US) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Khumbulani Kunene

We enter a long position with a target price of $69.00 and a stop-loss of $55.00.

Tyson Foods is one of the largest food and protein companies in the United States (US). The company processes, markets and distributes beef, pork, chicken and prepared food products that are sold to national and regional grocery retailers, regional grocery wholesalers, meat distributors, warehouse club stores, military commissaries, and industrial food processing companies.

The company's scale, extensive distribution network and exposure to multiple protein categories provides meaningful competitive advantages, although profitability remains sensitive to livestock costs, commodity prices, consumer demand, supply conditions and operating expenses.

Technically, the price in an inclining channel pattern presents an attractive buying opportunity (see the black parallel trendlines on the main chart). This pattern presents an attractive potential buying opportunity, particularly as the stock is trading relatively close to the lower boundary and limits further downside.

Strong volume support near the current price also supports a bullish bias (see the insert on the main chart) - this area reflects substantial historical trading activity and strong price acceptance, suggesting that buyers may defend the stock during temporary weakness.

Fading downside price momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram and the recent sideways trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator supports the bullish stance.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical Analysis

    • The lower panel shows occurrences of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) bullish divergence signals - a reading of one indicates when such a signal occurred. This pattern remains supportive of the bullish case and suggests that downside momentum is weakening, despite the recent pullback. While the price has continued to decline, the RSI has formed a higher low (see the insert), indicating that selling pressure is losing intensity and that the rate of the decline is slowing.
    • Our recommended entry range is $58 to $60, or as close as possible to $58.74 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $69, representing ~17.5% upside from current levels. According to forward calculations of the RSI indicator, the share will be overbought at $150, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is towards the end of October 2026, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $55, or 6.4% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade.

Fundamental view

    • Tyson Foods operates in four reportable segments, namely Beef (~40% of revenue), Chicken (~30% of revenue), Prepared Foods (~20%) and Pork (~10% of revenue), and has about 220 facilities worldwide.
    • The company has a solid footprint and serves retail and foodservice customers across the US and in approximately 140 other countries worldwide.
    • Tyson's products are marketed and sold primarily by its sales staff to grocery retailers and wholesalers, meat distributors, warehouse club stores, military commissaries, industrial food processing companies and chain restaurants. The company's largest customer, Walmart, accounts for nearly 20% of its revenue.
    • In recent 3Q26 results, sales growth was flat at $13.67 billion and adjusted operating income grew 8% to $547 million. This performance was underpinned by continued strength in the Chicken and Prepared Foods segments, with seven consecutive quarters of growth in Chicken and continued market share gains within the group's iconic brands.
    • The third-quarter results reflect the power of the group's differentiated multi-protein portfolio, strong customer partnerships and focus on operational excellence. Looking ahead, management remains confident in the group's ability to deliver long-term growth and create further value through the disciplined execution of ongoing strategic product-related initiatives.
    • From a risk perspective, Tyson Foods is exposed to cattle shortages coupled with feed price spikes following fluctuations in corn and soybean prices, which directly impacts poultry and pork raising costs. The company is also exposed to environmental regulatory challenges including strict oversight regarding wastewater discharge, greenhouse gas emissions, and plant waste management.
